Beyond the Behaviour: Leading Responsive Inclusion by Hayley Sellu

How can schools respond effectively to growing student needs when budgets are limited and specialist support is not always accessible? Drawing on 17 years of educational leadership in an international school in Oman, this workshop explores practical, sustainable approaches to inclusion that make effective use of existing resources and staff expertise.

Participants will examine how viewing behaviour as communication—supported by psychological and cognitive behavioural principles—can inform more responsive interventions, strengthen staff capacity and create more meaningful inclusion.  Through practical examples and reflection, participants will leave with adaptable strategies for their own school contexts.

Where UDL Meets SEL: Designing for Belonging and Learner Agency by Rubina Shaikh

This session explores the intersection of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), examining how their integration can create more inclusive, engaging, and emotionally supportive learning environments that respond to learner variability. By connecting the UDL framework with the CASEL framework for SEL, the session highlights how intentional learning design can foster belonging, student agency, well-being, and meaningful participation for all learners.

Drawing on practices from an international school setting, the session will share practical strategies for integrating UDL principles and SEL competencies into everyday teaching. Participants will explore how flexible learning experiences, multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression can work alongside social and emotional learning to support diverse learner needs across age groups and educational contexts. They will leave with practical approaches to designing inclusive classroom experiences that promote both academic engagement and social-emotional growth.
